This is valid question on the minds of millions of migrants who have settled in cities like Mumbai or Bangalore. They left their roots behind to find a foothold in life, a profession to excel in, maybe make a home away from home. They get up early in the mornings to commute in loaded buses and trains to reach their offices and again they commute back in the evenings only to begin another day all over again. They need the city as much as the city needs them. These millions who have flocked to the cities play an important part in the economic and commercial success of any country. Be it Bombay or Bangalore or Singapore or Shangai or Beijing, they cannot do without skilled personnel to run their huge turnover businesses or their transport or their schools and colleges or their small trades.

As human beings evolved, human dwellings have evolved from life in caves to today’s modern cities. Modern cities are big with multitudes of people always on the move. The main character of city is the cultural and occupational plurality. As the political parties argue and attack the so called ‘outsiders’, they forget that human beings have forever migrated in search of food and dwelling and have made settlements on other lands and grown roots and shoots there. No one will be able to trace original settlers in big cities like Mumbai or Bangalore.

Modern societies are evolving to be urban centric. In the modern open market economy driven globalised world, population will be all the more forced to move towards cities with immense job and business opportunities. Apart from developing infrastructure and providing basic housing for this huge migrant population, the government should ensure there are no clashes with the local community. The modern cities hold hope for many and these cities have changed fortunes of likes of Ambani family or Bachchan family. A citizen of this country has right to choose any profession or a place to dwell in any part of the country. One can extend horizon a bit further and choose to dwell anywhere on this planet. Earth belongs to all human beings. Politicians must stop abusing migrant citizens.

the clash between the ’son of the soil’ and ’stepson of the soil’ has been prevalent forever. however, in the present scenario, it doesn’t make sense. migrating to other cities for education or work is becoming increasingly common. flocks of people do it. thus, we should learn to treat India as our land which holds equal opportunities for each citizen, rather than let state boundaries bother us and amke us shun those from other parts of India.

Nobody pays taxes for the development of any particular state, they do so for the entire country. And if you are moving to a different city, you would be contributing to its growth directly or indirectly. The concept of regionalism is ridiculous. If Mumbai belongs only to Mumbaikars, I guess they should be separated from the country. Why not have state-based passports then?

Guess what? I think this debate of migrants and non-migrants doesn’t arise at all , since this is free India and the constitution gives the right to each citizens. And I also feel the citizens of any particular state harbor any hard feelings for them either. The main culprit are those crook politician who bring these issues into the foray and succeed to gain some mileage from it for meeting their own personal gains. The best possible slap for these crooks would be to defy their agenda. Pakistan is not the real threat to India. Its these politicians and religious zealots who are the real enemy.. Beware people !!

Yeah, as Bijoy said, India is one nation and nobody can do or should do a damn to stop anyone from making their living anywhere in India. We cannot have countries within a country. The moron called Raj Thackeray should be behind bars for the rest of his life for inciting ill feeling between Indians. He is nothing short of a ”Terrorist” who deserves to be incarcerated for life.

this is an insane argument. City belongs to a nation first than to the citizens living there. if locals in Mumbai claims that the city belongs to them and they have the right on the jobs and anything that belongs to the city is an argument beyond sanity. Do we need visa to work with in a country???

@ yash I agree with you. if India, which I am sure is, is a secular, democratic nation while each citizen given the right to equality and work in any part of India, the question put forth here is null and void. If demands like this will ever be adhered to will give push to chauvenism and that will be a catastrophic for the sovereignty of india.

It is quite difficult to decide. The demands of the ’sons of the soil’ cannot be rubbished as narrow mindset after all they themselves do not like the idea of being deprived of jobs in the land they lived for generations. As for the migrants, lack of opportunities back home have forced them to come foreign land for better livelihood. The entire issue is financial. Lopsided economic development is to be blamed for rising xenophobia in every part of the globe.
