Trouble in Paradise

Then it was Kashmir and now it is Darjeeling. Both the places are well-known for breathtaking natural beauty. Jammu and Kashmir is well-known as heaven on Earth and Darjeeling (and most of north-east tourist destinations) too is bestowed heavenly beauty with view of Kanchenjunga and tea-gardens on the slopes. Both are dotted with snow peaks and are on the borders of our country. They are now our paradises in trouble. Kashmir seems to be totally trapped in never-ending conflict. And with Gorkhaland agitations peaking this week, Darjeeling too seems will never be a safe tourist destination again.

Interestingly, foreigners and local tourists flock such heavenly hill destinations in search of beauty and peace, but the very peace eludes the local people. Is it a failure on the part of government of India? Or is it an unknown international conspiracy which engages conflicts? Much has been researched and documented and debated about militancy in Jammu and Kashmir but yet there is no solution. Local people’s life and their psyche are mutilated and changed forever. Hope Darjeeling doesn’t go Kashmir’s way. The issue of Gorkhaland needs to be sorted out once and for all and that too soon. It is a complex issue though. But immediate measures and solutions can only stop from it going beyond government’s control. Given the global trends of internal conflicts, they gain a life of their own and continuing conflicts benefits all political parties, except the poor local population who stand evicted from normal life.

Hill life in Darjeeling and surrounding north-east is tough. There are very few employment opportunities. Locals depend a lot on tourism and tea industry. Tea industry is already suffering. Many a tea gardens are sick or are completely closed down. More than 1,00,000 tea workers are affected. There is rampant malnutrition, infant deaths, suicides and human trafficking. Tourism brings only seasonal income. Such political strife which brings tourism to standstill will make situation more desperate.

Government of India should reassess why trouble brews in hill areas? Why have the economic and social reforms not reached there? Have they missed the globalization bus? What are the demands of local community? Is Government of India a part of the problem itself? We have no option but to keep our fingers crossed and watch helplessly as angry political mobs take to the streets and ruin our paradises.

That leaves Himachal as the only state with a Hilly terrain and a lot of peace. This apart, it is sad to know that tourism is severely getting affected in Darjeeling which could create a kind of crisis in the area.Darjeeling certainly depends a lot on tourism and with this row affecting the income generating source, the government now faces a daunting task of resolving this issue fast before hunger starts killing people there.

this is not surprising. when the Kashmir issue is unsolved we woefully can have trouble in Darjeeling. when our govt. has failed miserable to fight terror and separatist demand in Kashmir, Gurkha's have got inspiration from it to pursue another ghastly cause that will unsettle our east as much as north is.

terrorism ended the massive advantage of tourism that Kashmir used to enjoy for being the heaven on the earth. now Darjeeling seems to meet the same fate. hope india govt. will rise from its long slunber and make some efforts to solve the problems or else there will be troubles and troubles all the way for it to face in the near future.

Gorkhaland is an insane demand and i consider it nothing different than Kahlistan demand for Punjabis. It can not and should not be adhered to. Gorkhas has been given with ample rights in india and they enjoy equal rights as the indians do then i don't make it out why they come out with this stupid demand. this will give impetus to a new demand and who knows if other states will start demanding the same.

yes I agree with you Salil. this stupidity should end soon. today they are demanding a separate state, if granted, they will start asking for a separate nation. can india afford that?

Demand for Gorkhaland started as early as 1907. Yet Gorkhas stayed within West Bengal for almost a century hoping for equal rights and equal opportunities. Unfortunately as WB government is inviting investments and has IT sector in place, it is focussing only on Kolkata. Meanwhile with closing of many tea gardens in Darjeeling and Doars local people are left with almost no job opportunities and almost no development agenda has been chalked out for hill people. This is partly the reason for the desperation and the agitations. There are deeper political and social reasons as well for wanting a seperate state for nepali-speaking community. This situation is entirely due to failure of WB government and the Centre.

Indian Government has great record of sitting on the fence and not getting down to resolving the conflicts. For Khalistan many people died, Kashmir numbers are again huge and increasing and no can’t say how many lives will be killed for this new Gorkhaland agitation. Very sad.
