Indian Talent Outsourcing: Where does it stand?

india as outsourcing destination

India has emerged as one of the biggest Outsource destination for Off Shore companies(mainly based in UK and USA) in the last decade. BPOs, KPOs and economic boom that accompanied with the arrival of all the Offshore companies investing in Indian talent has changed economic demography of India. It has made both the parties very happy. Offshore companies have their margins of profit by employing Indians and paying them in Indian currency (which is peanuts compared to what they have to shell out in their countries) and India’s talented ocean of English speaking graduates, post graduates were very happy working in plush offices with incentive and perk decorated incomes. For some it meant no more struggle for few government jobs, or teaching jobs with whatever meager wages our government could offer for others it was a dream come true to work in European or American style offices and speak their languages.

The stress of grave-yard work culture is just beginning to show and ‘balloon’ is showing sign of bursting…but will it burst? The ‘lay off’ culture of these Off shore companies show little sympathy for the very talent they were keen on hiring. While these companies outsource their projects to Indian land,Indian’s are outsourcing their talents and hard work for these very companies. Before our resumes hit their bins we should pause and think about moving beyond ‘Indian clerk’ syndrome. Haven’t these companies made us just that…a sophisticated clerk who can do power presentations and handle customers? All these OffShore projects have deadlines and back office closure procedures, layoffs to do, we should think before they leave us all dead and in debt!

Hey it is a part and parcel of the thing. You can’t expect the cake and eat it too. They are not paying people in charity and should not also. It is just that it is time for Indian firms to create their own innovative things freeing them from the dependence on US firms. With the development of economy we can expect more ingenious works and more growth with new ideas.

I agree with you Arjun. At the end of the day, the foriegn co’s are in to make money and there is absolutely nothing wrong if they sack non performing employees, Indians or anyone for that matter, because at this current juncture, staying lean and mean is the mantra of these companies. And if you want to have a relaxed life, you just say goodbye to fat pay cheques and take a low pressure, low paying job. No pain, No gain.

In Asia, Indians and Filipinos are better English speakers and the skilled talents of both nationalities are very promising.

I believe the Philippines is getting a chunk of these BPOs, KPOs and other outsourcing projects.

I agree to Madhuri. Some of these companies are paying less to workers in Asia. Since their currency has a bigger value, generally they are not spending that much in overhead and gaining profits more than what is expected.

To a certain extent, graveyard workers are exploited with their health at risk and family interaction is lessened. I hope more than the perks of being BPO representatives, these companies will study the working conditions of these people so that they will be well-compensated.

Working is not all about money. It is a fruitful endeavor of working with enjoyment and satisfaction.
